Mosom (Grandfather) This exhibition explores the way of life and world view held by Allen's grandfather and his generation. Allen's grandfathers were raised as hunters and lived the nomadic life of the North Plains Cree before the signing of the Treaties. Their generation made the transition to the reserve life and learned to adapt by combining the "old way" with the "new". Allen's paternal grandfather Flying eagle fought in the Battle of Cutknife Hill during the 1885 resistance. Flying Eagle held strongly to the old way raising his son Alex Sapp (Allen's father) in the traditional hunting lifestyle. Allen's maternal grandfather Albert Soonias was also very traditional in his world view. But unlike Flying Eagle, Albert became one of the most successful farmer/ ranchers of the region at the turn of the last century with over 100 head of cattle, two hired hands, many horses and a variety of cereal crops. It was under the influence of his grandfathers that Allen was raised and matured as an individual. Many of Allen's richest paintings are drawn from his earliest memories of his grandfathers, and their way of life, their values and their beliefs. As we reflect upon the life of Allen Sapp, it is clear that his ancestors, the spirit of those who have passed still speak through him. Also on exhibition "Clearing a Path" an OSAC Saskatchewan Arts Board First Nation exhibition runs from July 1 to September 28, 2006. The goal of this exhibition is to celebrate the talent of Saskatchewan's finest Indigenous artists working in traditional media. |
